Pool sanitation is always an essential concern for swimmers while choosing a right place to swim, thus, building an effective pool water treatment system to keep pool water clean, clear and safe is always our priority. Traditional chlorine has been the most common form of pool sanitation for nearly a decade, through a chemical reaction, chlorine oxidizes contaminants in the water. While chlorine is cheap, easy and commonly used, treating your pool with only chlorine creates a high risk for chlorine-related health issues.
In 2016, TMU former president Yun-Yen was aware of the issue of excess chlorine contamination in the swimming pool, together with the decision made by the Dean of OPEA 甘乃文, Vice Dean Eva Chang and Chief 李政吉, Dean of Office of Environmental Protection and Occupational Safety 陳叡瑜, they decided to trade in a better and safer disinfection system. In March 2017, a combined UV treatment and ozone disinfection system is approved.
UV systems work by flowing pool water over a UV lamp that denatures bacterial DNA in the pool water passing over it. While ozone systems work by injecting ozone gas (O3) into the pool plumbing to oxidize pool water contaminants and chlorine-resistant microbes. They generate electrical energy that breaks down oxygen molecules (O2) to create a chemical reaction that produces ozone. Ozone pool systems allow swimmers to reduce chlorine consumption and are stronger oxidizers than chlorine. To upgrade the pool features, TMU invested a million to build a combined UV treatment with ozone system for disinfection of the swimming pool in July 2017. Swimmers can be less concerned about the excess chlorine consumption or other disinfection byproducts that can cause red eyes, asthma, allergies, dry skin and other serious health issues. A more promising environment is provided in TMU swimming pool.
