Taipei Medical University Basketball Association (TMUBA) — A New Chapter in TMU Basketball: The Year-Round Campus League Tips Off with Passion!

To elevate the quality of campus basketball competitions and strengthen the training and development of departmental teams, Taipei Medical University (TMU) officially launched the TMU Basketball Association (TMUBA) in the first semester of the 2025 academic year. After months of planning, the league held its grand opening on September 17, 2025. The inaugural season will run from mid-September 2025 through May 2026, concluding with a spectacular All-Star Game during TMU’s anniversary celebrations in May 2026.

In the past, TMU’s basketball events were separated into the Freshmen Cup in the first semester and the Interdepartmental Cup and Anniversary Cup in the second semester. Most games were played outdoors, where inclement weather often disrupted schedules or caused cancellations. Limited game opportunities also meant fewer chances for players to refine their skills.

To address this, the TMUBA now hosts an organized, year-round league system using the indoor TMU Gymnasium, enhancing both the competitiveness of departmental teams in intercollegiate tournaments and interaction among basketball enthusiasts across the university. To ensure the league’s institutionalization and long-term sustainability, in addition to registration fees from participating teams, the organizers also seek internal and external sponsorships and funding to maintain financial balance.

With strong support from the PE Affairs Office and the TMU Sports Support Association , every aspect of the league is moving toward professionalization:

  • Professional Officiating and Scoring Table — All referees are licensed, and scoring-table personnel have received professional training to ensure accurate, real-time game data.
  • Video Recording and Live Streaming — Each game is filmed by dedicated videographers and live-streamed via the official YouTube channel (with over 19 uploaded videos and 5,500+ views to date), allowing audiences on and off campus to share the excitement.
  • Statistics and Promotion — After every game, a detailed match report is released and an MVP (Most Valuable Player) is selected. Weekly updates include offensive and defensive stats, team standings, and a “Top 10 Plays” highlight video, continuously fueling enthusiasm and engagement throughout the season.
  • Social Media Engagement — The league’s official Instagram account has surpassed 185 followers, exceeding the total number of registered players, demonstrating the growing reach and influence of TMUBA across the campus community.

Despite the heavy academic workload faced by TMU students, participation in the league provides valuable opportunities to develop regular exercise habits, enhance athletic skills, relieve stress, and build friendships with like-minded peers. Looking ahead, the TMU Basketball Association plans to further expand the league by introducing a women’s division, lowering entry barriers, and encouraging broader student participation in sports competitions. Through these efforts, the league aims to cultivate stronger teamwork, responsibility, and sportsmanship among TMU students.

The TMU Basketball Association sincerely invites all faculty and students to join in witnessing this exciting new chapter of basketball at TMU.
